ASCII is the original 7-bit character set: 128 codes, from 0 to 127, covering the English letters, digits, punctuation and a few control codes. It forms the first 128 code points of Unicode, so every ASCII character can be written in HTML either directly or with a numeric code such as A, and many have a named entity such as &.
Codes 0 to 31 (and 127) are invisible control codes, such as tab, line feed and carriage return, so they are not listed. The chart below starts at code 32, the space, followed by punctuation, digits, uppercase and lowercase letters. In HTML you only need entities for a few of these: <, > and & in text, plus " or ' inside attribute values.
